Family members of the Constitution Drafting Committee of 1972 on Saturday protested the Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer's comments on the constitution saying that constitution of Bangladesh was written on the soil of this independent sovereign country.
In a statement sent to the media on behalf of the families members of the Constitution Drafting Committee of Bangladesh came up with the comments.
It was mentioned in the statement that Jamaat Ameer Shafiqur Rahman's statement on the constitution published in daily Prothom Alo on October 10 stating that the Jamaat Ameer said the constitution of Bangladesh was written sitting on the soil of India. That is why our constitution has not got Bangladesh as its homeland, according to the report.
Protesting his statement, the family members of the Constitution Drafting Committee of 1972 said that the constitution has been written on the soil of independent-sovereign Bangladesh.
They also said that the constitution of Bangladesh was written in the blood of millions of martyrs that contains the ideal philosophy of the great Liberation War of 1971.
The then government issued Constituent Assembly Order on March 23, 1972 for the purpose of framing the Constitution of Bangladesh. The sole function of the Constituent Assembly was to frame the constitution for Bangladesh. With the issuance of this order, the formal work of drafting the constitution began.
They also said that Bangabandhu was elected as the leader of the parliamentary party in the Constituent Assembly while a committee of 34 members led by Dr Kamal Hossain was also formed on April 11 in 1972 for the formulation of the constitution of the newly independent Bangladesh.
The statement said that the members of the Bangladesh Constitution Drafting Committee worked day and night to reflect the dreams and aspirations of the people and wrote the constitution of independent sovereign Bangladesh.
After long discussions and debates, the Constituent Assembly passed the Constituent Assembly on November 4 in 1972 on the soil of independent sovereign Bangladesh.
The Constitution came into force on the first Victory Day, 16 December 1972. Four members of the Constitution Drafting Committee are still alive. They are Dr Kamal Hossain, Barrister Amir-ul Islam, Prof Abu Syed and Abdul Muttakim Chowdhury, according to the statement.
