NALITABARI, SHERPUR, Oct 7: Thousands of acres of standing Aman crop, about 25 villages and local roads were submerged in Nalitabari Upazila of the district due to a flash flood on Friday morning.

The sudden flooding was triggered by hilly tide from the upstream of Meghalaya in India. Hundreds of houses were inundated in the upazila, marooning 20,000 people.

Abnormal water rises were reported in the Chellakhali and Bhogai rivers in the upazila.

On Friday, the water of the Chellakhali River was flowing above 27.28 centimetre (cm) of the danger mark while the Bhogai River was flowing above 7.56cm of the danger level.

According to Water Development Board-Sherpur, at 10am 177 milimetre (mm) rainfall was recorded in Sherpur while 255mm and 260mm were recorded at two points of Nalitabari.

Flood affected people said, the rain continued dropping for the whole night of Thursday.

Due to excessive raining, the upstream tide started to rush down from India's Meghalya and burst banks of these two rivers.

Water entered in hundreds of houses in about 25 villages including Andharupara, Polashikura, Batkuchi Burunga, Atbhaipara, Ambagan Bekikura, Tazurabad, Sonnasivita, Baghber, Rajnagar, Jogania, Hatipagar, Dudhkura, Rupakura, Nayabil, Tontor, Shimultala, Gorkanda, Morichpuran, and Konnagor.

Besides, thousands of acres of standing Amabn fields were submerged in these localities.

Pond fishers were floated away while earthen walls collapsed. Huge damages were also reported with poultry and vegetables.

A road adjacent to Nonni Moitri College was submerged, disrupting local communication with the district town.

Flood affected Sajibul Haq and Abdullah Munsi of Andharupara Village said, "On Friday morning, water started to burst river banks. We could have left houses but all belongings were submerged. We didn't see such flooding in about last 41 years."

Flood-affected people took shelter on raised roads, haats and bazars, schools and colleges along with their cattle. Many are starving.

Locals demanded speed boats and boats for rescuing stranded people.

Nalitabari Upazila  Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md Masud Rana confirmed the flash flood in the upazila.

People suffered huge damages, and, after the water recession damage cost can be estimated, he added.

"We are with the flood-affected people. Emergency dry food distribution  is continuing," the UNO maintained.
