Dengue patients on the rise at Mirzaganj

MIRZAGANJ, PATUAKHALI, Oct 7: Alarming dengue menace is continuing in Mirzaganj Upazila of the district.

As the dengue patients are increasing day by day, 50-bed Mirzaganj Upazila Hospital has been treating patients on floor and stairs due to space shortage.

As mosquito nets cannot be hanged on floor and stairs as asked by the hospital authorities, patients and relatives were seen using coil. Patients are injected saline by hanging the saline bottle somehow.

In this situation, many are undergoing treatment at home.

According to sources at the hospital, till Oct 3, 26 dengue patients were admitted to the hospital; in 24 hours, nine patients were admitted.

At present, 101 dengue patients are undergoing treatment in the hospital. No fatality was reported.

On condition of anonymity, a man of Charkhali Village said, he came to the hospital on Oct 2 at 10pm with his dengue-affected minor son; but due to bed crisis, his son is being treated in the corridor.

It would be better if few more wards would be opened for dengue patients and separate wards for children, he added.

Patients are suffering additionally due to load-shedding.

Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Dr Tan Mong said, "It has been difficult to admit all coming dengue patients. Our doctors and nurses are hiccupping to treat."

If the current rate of patients continues, the shortage of saline and medicine is likely.

"We are not refusing to treat any patient. Many patients are being treated on the floor and stairs. It was discussed at the upazila Parishad meeting. Steps will be taken to make awareness about dengue."

Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md Tariqul Islam said, as part of dengue checking, it has been asked for killing mosquitoes by fogger machines at different points in the upazila.

"Our union committee members are working on making campaign about dengue awareness," the UNO added.
