Former Madaripur councilor arrested in Tawhid murder case

A former councilor Madaripur municipality has been arrested by Rapid Action Battalion (RAB)-8 in connection with the murder of Tawhid Sornamat during the recent anti-discrimination student movement.

HM Moniruzzaman Akhtar Hawlader, 50, former councilor of ward No. 2 of Madaripur municipality, was arrested on Sunday at around 11:30 PM, from Shakuni Lake area of the city. 

RAB-8 Company Commander Lt. Md. Shahriar Rifat Avi confirmed the information through a press release on Monday. 

According to RAB, on July 19, supporters of Shajahan Khan, including members of Chhatra League and Jubo League, launched an unprovoked attack on student protestors and public using hand grenades, rods, locally-made sharp weapons, and firearms on the highway between Khagdi bus stand and Youth Development Department Training Center under Sadar Police Station. During the attack, Akhtar Hawlader shot Tawhid Sornamat in the left thigh, causing severe fractures. Tawhid later died while undergoing treatment.

A murder case was filed at Sadar Model Police Station in connection with Tawhid Sornamat's death on August 26, in which the former councilor was named as an accused. 

The arrested individual has since been handed over to Madaripur Sadar Model Police Station, added the press release.
