Ibrahim Farazi, the president of the Jagannath University (JnU) unit of the Bangladesh Chhatra League and a fugitive accused in three murder cases, has recently resurfaced on Facebook, raising serious concerns among students and authorities. Farazi, who has been on the run since August 5, was seen active on social media despite his fugitive status.
On Thursday, October 3, Farazi's Facebook account became active, and he changed his profile picture just the day before. He was also observed commenting on various pages and posts, leading to outrage among students. Although a prime suspect in multiple murder cases, Farazi continues to evade arrest.
Farazi is accused of playing a central role in the violence and oppression of students during the anti-discrimination protests at Jagannath University and Old Dhaka. He is alleged to have not only participated in these attacks but also orchestrated them. On August 20, following the fall of the AL government, a murder case was filed against him by Kulsum Akhter, the mother of Omar Faruq, a student of Kabi Nazrul Islam College who was killed during the unrest.
The next day, on August 21, Samsul Arefin, a student of the Bengali department at Jagannath University and the organizational secretary of the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, filed a case at Sutrapur Police Station. He accused Farazi of the shooting death of Elem Al Faidi, an apprentice technician, in Old Dhaka's Laxmibazar area. Then, on September 16, Rabiul Islam Shawan filed another murder case at Kotwali Police Station, accusing Farazi of the killing of Monirul Islam Apu.
Farazi's reappearance on social media, despite being wanted in connection with three murders, has triggered widespread fear and frustration among the student body. Many students have condemned the fact that a murder suspect can freely use social platforms while remaining out of reach of law enforcement. "It's terrifying for those of us who believe in justice and freedom," said one student. "This is not only a threat to us but also an insult to the memory of the martyrs. We demand his immediate arrest and justice."
Samsul Arefin, the Chhatra Dal leader and complainant in one of the cases, said, "These allies of fascist regimes are trying to reassert themselves through acts of violence and intimidation. They must be brought to justice without delay so that the fruits of the people's uprising can be delivered to the students of Bangladesh."
Md. Saiful Islam, the Officer-in-Charge of Sutrapur Police Station, said that the investigation is ongoing and action will be taken against those found guilty. On the topic of Farazi's social media activity, he added, "We are not in contact with the suspect through social media. However, if we receive information, we will take steps to apprehend him."
