Unplanned RCC footover bridges turn useless

RAJSHAHI, Oct 4: Six footover bridges of Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) are not coming of any public use.

There were constructed at Tk 50 crore. These were opened on September 11.

Two more footover bridges are under-construction in the RCC.

Pedestrians said, these bridges were not set up in proper places. Besides, these are risky as these were not built in a planned way.

Six bridges are located in New Govt Degree College Gate, Laxmipur Mintu Chhatar, Nawdapara Bazar, Talaimari crossing, Binodpur crossing, Agrani School and College Front.

Two new bridges are set up at Moni Chattar and Misson Girls School front.

In two packages, under 'combined city infrastructure project' eight footover  bridges were initiated at about Tk 50.72 crore. The work order was given to Masud Steel Design BD Ltd and MSCL and MSBDL.

Height of each bridge is 5.8 metre while width is 3.6 metre.

A patient Abul Hayat who came from Naogaon was seen using road divider to cross road in the city's Laxmipur crossing without using the Footover Bridge.

"How can I get on the bridge? It will take much time. Tiles are slippery. If I use the bridge, I can be injured. I am not supposed to be injured as I have come to receive treatment from a doctor. So, I am passing the road by using the divider."

A student of New Degree College Mahfuzul Haq said, "We don't use this bridge. Sometimes, we get on it for taking picture. Many use it for TikTok. Stairs are very high. These are risky. There is not much traffic jam in this area. Normally we pass the road like before."

Student Nipun Ray of Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology (RUET) was passing the road in Talaimari area. He said, "The Footover Bridge could be four-faceted at Talaimari. It is not coming of our use. It was not built in a planned way."

RCC's Chief Executive Officer Dr ABM Sharif Uddin said, "Despite traffic jam in Dhaka, people don't use footover bridges.

These have been set up for overcoming jam. We are working on making people used to using these. Traffic controllers  also need to see these. I am not informed of setting tiles and stairs beneath. I asked the Engineering Department for repairing if there is any construction problem."

Professor Dr MST Ilme Faridtul, head of the City and Regional Planning Department of RUET, said, "It needs to be seen firstly whether these bridges were necessary. There was mistake in the proposals of these bridges. Planning was made wilfully. Such bridge is necessary at critical point."

RCC Administrator  and Rajshahi Divisional Commissioner Dr Muhammad Humayun Kabir said, "Measures will be taken after seeing what steps need to make these fit for uses. Tiles in the beneath were set up according to design. If necessary, these will be repaired."
