Diarrhoea breaks out in Madaripur

MADARIPUR, Oct 1: Diarrhoea and water-borne diseases including pneumonia have been broken out in the district in recent times.
Most of the patients are children and old men. Hundreds of patients have been admitted to the district headquarters hospital in the last week.

According to hospital sources, the number of patients increased due to rough weather. 
Patients and relatives said, more than hundred patients have been admitted to Madaripur 250-bed District Hospital in the last few days.

The number of patients is increasing every day. 

The district headquarters hospital has six seats for diarrhoea patients. But now it has been increased to 32. 
Treatment of this disease is being given in the old building. Besides, other patients with waterborne diseases are being treated in the new building of the six-storey hospital. 

The sources said, the Health Department advised drinking more liquid food as well as staying clean. Doctors and nurses are also in a difficult situation. Shawkat Mia of Chandrapur in Sadar Upazila said, "I brought my child to the hospital because of  diarrhoea. At first the condition was bad, but now she has improved."

Akhtar Sheikh said, "My daughter was admitted to the hospital two days before. She is on medication including saline. She is now better."

Kalyani Sarkar, senior staff nurse at Madaripur Sadar Hospital, said, there has been an outbreak of diarrhoea; new patients are being admitted every day; we are providing services at our level best.

Madaripur Sadar Hospital Supervisor and Civil Surgeon Dr Munir Ahmed Khan said, the use of contaminated water is one of the causes of the water-borne diseases; this disease can also be caused by eating rotten food items; in the case of waterborne diseases, adequate liquid food should be consumed; in addition, if symptoms appear, the patients should go to specialist doctors for better consultation.
