Public Administration Ministry Senior Secretary Dr Md Mokhles Ur Rahman on Monday claimed that the allegation of underhand dealing over the recent deputy commissioner's (DC) appointment with bribery is not true and even the cheque which was given is a 'fake' cheque.

"The news of underhand dealing over recent DC appointment with bribery is 'false' and 'motivated' one. Publishing such news, the Bengali newspaper has spread rumour and made the news viral through the social media. It was nothing. I would like to request you all that please verify information before giving it as news. Your role would be questioned if such fake news is published," the senior secretary said at a press conference held in the ministry conference room at Bangladesh Secretariat.

In the programme, the senior secretary informed that a total of 17 deputy secretaries have been identified for creating chaotic situation demanding posting a DC recently at the Public Administration Ministry. "The ministry is likely to take punitive measures against them as soon as possible."

"The probe body has recommended that government to pronounce major punishment against eight persons, light punishment against five persons and warning four persons for their misdeed," he added.

Regarding the cheque issue, Dr. Mokhles claimed it as a 'fake' one and said, "What was there? Name of a person, his name was Sobed Ali. He opened a 'fake account' with the Padma Bank giving onlt Tk2,000 in 2023. During the investigation about the cheque, there was no balance in the account."

"What's the benefit of spreading such a fake news to mislead the nation. A probe body was formed and the report was received. It was seen during the investigation that the bank manager has opened the account without filling up a form. The account holder was not available in the address given in the account and his mobile number was switched off. A man who can issue a cheque of Tk3 crore can never be such light one," the secretary added.

He said, "We have asked the police to take legal action against the person. But, he fled away after making such a disaster with fake information. Same time, we will also ask Bangladesh Bank that what kinds of procedures are maintained to open an account."

The cheque of Tk3 crore was found recently at the Joint Secretary (APD Wing) room in the ministry.
