CHAR FASSON, BHOLA, Sept 30: The 20-bed Saudi Hospital in Char Fasson Upazila of the district is running in a lackadaisical manner due to manpower  crisis.

In 1998, this hospital was established at about Tk 5 crore, which was financed by the Saudi government for providing treatment to more than 2.5 lakh coastal people.

The hospital structure included a four-storey building and four staff quarters; it was equipped with necessary things including tools, ultra sonogram, x-ray, ECG, dental unit, ambulance, and operation theatre.

Four doctors were posted. But after few days, healthcare activities were suspended.

At present, there is only one doctor in the hospital. He also remains absent for most of the time. In his absence, office assistant carries out activities.

According to sources, a letter was sent to the government for handing over its manpower to the revenue sector. But it was not approved. So, doctors, officers, and employees  left their jobs.

There are 32 granted posts in the hospital. Of these, 23 posts are vacant.

A recent visit found broken grills, walls, doors and windows   of the hospital; basins and commodes on the second floor were broken; rooms are in heaps of waste and garbage.

It could not be possible to enter the third floor because it was locked.  Residential buildings for doctors and nurses have been unfit for living. Cows and goats are living there.

Ground floor of the hospital and residential buildings are also used by drug-pedlars and gamblers. Teenagers are seen making TikTok. An electric pole has collapsed. Surroundings of the hospital have been bushy.

Cleaner Md Kamal Hossain of the hospital said, when the hospital is open, vagabond youths enter and make the inside dirty.

An old patient Ayatun Nesa  who came to the hospital for taking treatment, said, "I am suffering from arthritis and my granddaughter has been affected  by sneezing and coughing. We came for treatment."

"We did not get doctor. We are going back," she added.

A patient Joynal said, "I have been suffering gastric for a long time. I did not get doctor in the hospital. So, I am going to a quack doctor."
Residential Medical Officer of the hospital Dr Humayun Kabir has been absent in the hospital for few months. He has established a big diagnostic centre in his own area of Lalmohan.

Medical Officer Dr Talha Samiul Haq has been posted in the hospital from the upazila health complex. But he sees patients in a private diagnostic centre in Dakkhin Aicha area.

At present, only one Office Assistant Habibul Haq is supervising the hospital.

Other staffs are not attending the office. They have opened different businesses.

Habibul Haq said,  "Everyday four/five patients are coming. But I have to face disarray for not providing treatment and medicines."

Quack Hasnine and Mzan Ali and businessman Julfikar Talukdar said, people of this area will have to go to Char Fasson Sadar for taking treatment by rounding 15-26 kilometre roads.

When Acting Residential Medical Officer of the hospital Dr Humayun Kabir was contacted over mobile phone, he did not respond.

Bhola Civil Surgeon Dr AKM Shafiquzzaman said, "We will inform the authorities about the manpower crisis of the hospital. We hope it will be opened soon."
