Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) in a drive arrested an alleged gold smuggler along with five gold bars along Lalmonirhat border on Monday morning.
The arrested is Shahidul Islam, 52, a resident of Anantapur village of Phulbari upazila in Kurigram.
Acting Captain of BGB-15 Lalmonirhat Battalion Major Asiful Islam Siddiqui confirmed the matter.
BGB-15 Lalmonirhat Battalion sources said that acting on a tip-off, a team of the force from Gangarhat BOP BGB outpost was informed that a gold consignment will be smuggled to India through the border.
Acting on the tip-off, the team challenged a motorbike and arrested its driver Shahidul Islam when he was trying to smuggle the gold to India on a motorcycle through Gangarhat area of ​​Kurigram district, about 100 yards from border pillar 939/7S.
The market value of the seized gold bars, weighing 566.65 grams (45 bhari 9 annas 2 rati 5 points), is Tk 66 lakh 77 thousand 403.
Phulbari Police Station officer-in-charge Nawabur Rahman said the arrested was handed over to the police and legal actions were being taken in this regard.
