A schoolgirl and three fishermen were killed by lightning strikes in separate incidents in two districts - Dinajpur and Sunamganj, on Saturday.
DINAJPUR: A schoolgirl was killed and two others were injured after being struck by lightning in Sadar Upazila of the district on Saturday.
The deceased was identified as Farida Aktar, 15, daughter of Fayzuddin Rahman Babu, a resident of Gobinathpur Kasaripara Village under Uthrail Union in the upazila. She was a ninth grader at Godagari High School. The injured two are the friends of the deceased.
It was known that a streak of lightning struck on three girls including Farida when they were returning home from a couching centre in Godagari after completing classes in the evening, which left the trio critically injured.
Locals then rescued the injured girls.
Later on, Farida died on the way to Dinajpur M Abdur Rahim Medical College Hospital. The injured received primary treatment from the hospital.
Uthrail Union Parishad Chairman Ruhul Amin confirmed the incident.
SUNAMGANJ: Three fishermen were killed by lightning strikes in in separate incidents while catching fish in haors in Dowarabazar and Jamalganj upazilas of the district on Saturday morning.
The deceased were identified as Md Jalal Mia, son of Chan Mia, and Md Jashim Uddin, son of Md Nurul Haque, residents of West Polirchar Village under Pandargaon Union in Dowarabazar Upazila; and Shorif Mia, son of Abdul Latif, a resident of Kalaguza Village in Jamalganj Upazila.
It was known that a streak of lightning struck on Jalal and Jashim in the morning while they were catching fish in the Dekhar Haor Dowarabazar Upazila, which left both of them dead on the spot.
On information, the family members recovered their bodies from the scene.
Meanwhile, Sharif Mia was also killed on the spot when he was catching fish in the Paknar Haor in Jamalganj Upazila on the same day.
Additional Superintend of Police in Sunamganj Md Jakir Hossain confirmed the incidents, adding that necessary steps would be taken in these connections.
