PABNA, Sept 25: The Cold Run of one of three diesel generator units has been completed at Unit 1 of Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant recently.
The procedure was carried out in two stages: first, the diesel generator was tested using compressed air to check the operability of all systems. In the next stage, fuel was used to start the generator.
The diesel generator units are the most important element of the NPP safety system. They provide a standby power supply for the equipment when the reactor needs to be stopped for any reason. The unit's height is 5.5 metres, the length is 13 metres, the weight is 185 tons and the rated electric power is 6.3 MW.
"Before starting the power unit, all its systems undergo close quality control and operation testing; this is a mandatory process at the commissioning stage. The life cycle of Russian NPPs is more than 100 years, and we guarantee the reliability and safety of our technologies," said Alexey Deriy, Atomstroyexport vice-president for projects in Bangladesh.
Rooppur NPP is being implemented with technical and financial assistance from Russia. It will host two power units with a total capacity of 2,400 MW. Russian VVER-1200 reactors have been chosen for the project. This is an evolutionary Generation III+ design reactor that fully complies with all the international safety requirements. Rosatom Engineering Division is the project's general designer and general contractor.
