Malta growers frustrated over poor price in Pirojpur

PIROJPUR, Sept 25: Malta growers are frustrating in the district over dismal prices of their produce.

The district administration conceded malta fruit as the District Branding 12 years back, expecting to inspire growers about this non-traditional item so that they could bring in financial solvency. 

Giving highest priority and consultative incentives to farmers, the malta farming was made most popular in the district. 

 At least, 1,000 small medium and large orchards of the malta were raised in seven upazilas of the district, said sources at the Department of Agriculture Extension.

Per season malta production stood at 1,500 tonnes. 

District Marketing Officer (DMO) Abdul Mannan Hawlader said, in full season, malta is selling at Tk 25-30  per kilogram (kg) at the wholesale level while selling at Tk   40-50 at the retail level. 

The average cultivation cost is Tk 20-25 per kg. 

Another reason is that imported malta is tastier than local one, he added.

He further said, during the September-November period, government should stop import of malta from foreign countries. 

Malta is being cultivated across the country.
