PATHARGHATA, BARGUNA, Sept 23: Fishermen are facing uttered disarray in Patharghata Upazila of the district due to suspended ice supply because of suspended electricity supply.
According to local sources, the electricity supply has been continuing in the upazila for the last four days, throwing over one lakh subscribers into disarray.
With the suspended electricity supply, the ice production has been suspended.
Fishers can't go to the deep sea with their over 100 fishing trawlers because of ice crisis.
From September 13 to 16 the electricity supply has been suspended at Patharghata; in the absence of the electricity, 22 ice mills were closed.
At present, thousands of fishers are suffering.
While talking with this correspondent of The Daily Observer, locals complained of the electricity disruption.
"The electricity situation was good before. Our village has been disconnected of electricity suddenly. When men of Palli Bidyut are reported, they just make dilly-dallying ," they added.
Nasir Hossain, operator of Allahor Daan trawler, said, "We have been to the fishing ghat for few days. We are supposed to go to deep sea soon after the weather is fair. But due to suspended ice production, we have fallen into serious problem."
Owner of Mayer Doa Ice Mill Md Selim Mia said, "Our business is dependent on electricity. In the absence of electricity, we can't produce ice. We don't know we will get electricity. Trawlers are waiting at the ghat for ice."
Deputy General Manager of the Palli Bidyut Samity-Patharghata Abdus Salam said, since September 13, a 33 KV line in neighbouring Mothbaria Upazila has developed fault; it has not been repaired; after its repairing, it will be possible to resume electricity supply to Patharghata.
But he could not said when the Mathbaria line will be re-launched.
