ECOFISH II celebrates Coastal Cleanup Day in Bangladesh

Bangladesh has the world's longest natural sea beach, and approximately 35 million people live in the coastal area of Bangladesh, which represents one-thirds of the total population. 
USAID's ECOFISH II works for conserving marine biodiversity and supporting the livelihoods of coastal communities, says a press release.  
A discussion held recently, on awareness-raising for biodiversity conservation and the importance of ecosystems in marine life, habitats, and the sustainability of fisheries. The risks of marine pollution, particularly plastic waste, were also discussed. ECOFISH II project raises awareness about the harmful impacts of waste on the marine environment and encourages lasting behavioral change among coastal communities.
The project has engaged 140 young local motivated volunteers (Blue Guards) at 10 locations covering Teknaf, Cox's Bazar Sadar, Moheshkhali, Kutubdia, Ukhiya, Kalapara and Charfasson Upazilas. Blue Guards are cleaning the seashore twice a month to reduce plastic pollution and biodiversity loss by discarded nets. 
ECOFISH II Teknaf team assist Shamlapur Landing center based Fisheries Co-management Committee to organize the events with a rally attended by approximately Sixty (64) Landing Center-based Fisheries Co-Management Committee members, Blue Guards, Citizen Scientists, Fisheries Conservation Groups, representatives from the Department of Fisheries, local stakeholders, along with the local community and beneficiaries. After the beach cleaning event volunteers collected 70Kg of non-biodegradable plastics, polyethene, bottles & discarded monofilament gillnet and making it safe dumping place.
Shohidul Alam from DoF, Teknaf said fishermen have to play the most important role in protecting the biodiversity in the sea. If we do not prevent marine pollution, fish will disappear from our oceans in the future.
Zahedul Alam, President of LFCC said that we must keep our shoreline neat and clean. If we can keep it clean the reputation of our sea beach as a tourist spot will increase. Jahangir Alam a Blue Guard expressed hope that will work to increase public awareness about fishermen to prevent plastic pollution in the future.
Nasrullah Al Mamun, Research Associate, highlighted the purpose and significance of the program and said that if we are not aware of the way plastic pollution, fish biodiversity will decreasing day by day and by the year 2050, we will find more plastic instead of fish. Sohel Rana, Research Assistant moderated the event and said that increasing ocean pollution will have an impact on the marine environment, economy and quality of life in the future.
