A total of 52 garment factories have been declared closed in Ashulia of Savar on Monday amid a fresh wave of unrest among workers over several demands, including wage hikes.
Superintendent for Industrial Police-1 Md Sarwar Alam informed the media a total of 52 factories in the Ashulia area have halted production activities.
Of these, 43 factories have been closed based under Section 13(1) of the Bangladesh Labour Act 2006, and general holiday has been declared in 9 factories.
Some 39 factories are members of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) as the unrest lingers.
According to the industrial police, the workers have been staging demonstration since the beginning of the month to press home their various demands, including a minimum wage of Tk 25,000. The production in the rest of the factories has resumed in the beginning of the week.
But workers from several factories resumed protests and disrupting operations. Later, factory authorities have declared the closure of these factories.
Besides, workers from the Generation Next factory in the Narsinghpur area blockaded the Abdullahpur-Bypail road on Monday morning, demanding two months of unpaid wages and the reopening of their factory.
