A former member of an extremist group was shot and hacked to death by assailants at Goalanda upazila in Rajbari district on Sunday.
The incident took place around 6:15 PM near a tea shop in Kataikhali area in the upazila.
Deceased Sushil Kumar Sarkar, 57, son of late Monindra Nath Sarkar from Haulikheutil area in the upazila, had multiple criminal cases filed against him, including three firearm cases and two for murder.
His younger brother, Sunil Sarkar, reported that he rushed to the scene after being informed that his brother had been attacked. He found Sushil lying near a tea shop and immediately took him to the hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Goalanda Ghat Police Station officer-in-charge Md. Rakibul Islam confirmed the murder and said that internal conflict within the extremist group might be the reason for the killing.
Sushil had stab wounds on his neck and gunshot marks on his abdomen. The body has been sent for an autopsy, and police are investigating to identify the perpetrators, added the OC.
