A man was reportedly beaten to death by a mob on suspicion of being a thief in Kalukhali upazila of Rajbari district on Saturday morning.
The incident was occurred a day after the police warned that strict action will be taken if anyone takes law on their own hand.
The man was Nazmul Hossain Molla, 32, son of Ahmed Molla of Garakhola village of Madhukhali upazila of Faridpur district.
Quoting the locals, officer-in-charge of Kalukhali Police Station Mohammad Zahedur Rahman said Nazmul along with his two cohorts were returning after stealing a transformer of Polli Bidyut at Harinbaria village of Kalukhali upazila early in the morning.
Sensing the incident, locals chased them but two associates of Nazmul managed to escape the spot. Agitated people detained him and beat Nazmul up indiscriminately, leaving him critically injured.
Dr Israt Jahan, health and family planning officer of Kalikhali Upazila Health Complex, said some unidentified people brought the man and left him near the staircase of the heath complex at around 8.45am.
The man died at around 12.30pm on Saturday while undergoing treatment at the health complex. They informed the matter to the police, she added.
The OC said that the body of Nazmul has been kept at the Rajbari Sadar Hopital morgue for autopsy. There were 11 cases filed against Nazmul in different police stations, he said.
