Fahim Hasan, who sustained bullet injuries during the recent student-led mass upsurge, and his parents have been sent to Thailand for better treatment at the cost of the government.
Under the direct supervision of Health and Family Welfare Adviser Nurjahan Begum, critically injured Fahim and his parents (as attendants) were sent to Vejthani Hospital in Bangkok of Thailand, said a media release signed by Mohammad Shahadat Hossain, senior information officer of the ministry on Wednesday.
A one-time financial assistance of Tk 800,000 has been provided from the Anti-Discrimination Welfare Fund to cover their meals, accommodation, internal travel, and medical expenses, it reads.
Moreover, Abdul Muyeed Chowdhury, chairman of Biman Bangladesh Airlines, waived the airfare of the attendants and providing seven tickets (including return tickets) for their journey.
Taka 50,000 from the fund was provided to day labourer Md Abdur Rashid, 29, son of Nazrul Islam, of Bhajanpur of Panchagarh, for his treatment as he was also injured in the movement.
Two more students, MdAbu Bakar Siddique and Khokon Chandra Barman, undergoing treatment at Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery, are also being considered for medical care abraod.
Hospitals were asked to provide information about any injured individuals whose treatment may not be possible in the country.
If such people are identified, arrangements will be made to send them abroad for advanced treatment if necessary, according to the release.
A US-based service foundation was contacted for treatment of those suffering from eye injuries and currently receiving treatment in various hospitals. They will soon be sending a team of specialists to Bangladesh for further assistance.
