A female garment worker has been killed and at least 20 others injured in a clash between workers in the Ashulia area of Savar in Dhaka.
The incident occurred just as the sector was set to return to production after unrest in the industrial area.
Ashulia police Inspector (Operations) Nirmal Kumar Das said a three-way clash between workers from three factories started in the Zirabo area around 9:45am on Monday.
The deceased was identified as Mosammat Rokeya Begum, 30, an assistant sewing machine operator at the Mascot Garments Ltd factory. She started working there on December 1, 2021.
Industrial Police say that the factory had been closed under Section 13(1) of the Labour Act. On Tuesday, factory workers took up positions in front of the factory gate, demanding that it be reopened.
Some of the workers then attacked the Southern and Radiance Garments factories nearby, leading to a three-way clash between the workers of the three factories.
Rokeya was killed when she was hit by a brick chip during the clash, said Inspector Nirmal. Several others have been injured, he said.
They have been admitted to Savar's Enam Medical College Hospital and other medical centres for treatment.
