BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has alleged that a vested quarter has already stared working to keep Professor Muhammad Yunus led interim government in power indefinitely.
Demanding the announcement of holding election as soon as possible, he power must have to be handed over to the elected government after holding an election. Then the elected government will decide where reforms or changes have to be carried out. The next parliament will decide whether the constitution would require to be written anew or it would need to be amended.
Mirza Fakhrul made the remarks while speaking at a discussion organized by Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) in the capital on Monday (September 16).
The BNP leader alleged that the fascist Hasina government has destroyed the country both socially and economically clinging to power over the last 15 years. They have destroyed all democratic institutions.
Referring to the Election Commission (EC) reform, he laid strong emphasis on holding the general election as quickly as possible after minimum reforms to the electoral body.
Fakhrul observed that a vested quarter has already started working to foil the possibility of creating a new Bangladesh which was achieved through the bloodshed of students and people.
"Important people of the society have already started making confusing remarks. The government has given responsibility to some people who are saying floating a new political party. It is quite surprising that who has given them the responsibility of floating a new political party? Now, tell me how people will know that they are working impartially?"
The BNP leader further said: "We have been repressed and tortured as many as 15 years. Khaleda Zia has suffered in jail for a long time. Our leader Tarique Rahman has been staying abroad being tortured. Some 60 lakh cases were filed against our leaders and workers. We demand withdrawal of cases as early as possible. Besides, provide compensation to the families of those who were killed and injured during the long anti-government struggle."
Mirza Fakhrul alleged that a vested interest has already working to keep the interim government in power for an indefinite period. They claimed that they would change the country entirely through reforms. If that is the case, people will not be required, parliament will not be needed. A newspaper has published the results of a survey report of BRAC Institute which have shown that the respondents want the interim government stays in power as long as it wishes. "I don't know how did they conduct this survey. But, people won't accept the results of this survey," he said.
The BNP Secretary General urged the interim government to hold election as early as possible bringing reforms to the Election Commission. "A parliament is required to give priority to people's opinions. People's hopes and aspirations will never be fulfilled if there is no parliament in the country. So, power must have to handed over through a free and fair election as quickly as possible."
