The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has started an investigation into various corruption allegations brought against two former lawmakers and former vice-chancellor of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Digital Universit.

The commission took the decision based on its primary inquiry report on Sunday.

Former lawmaker of Dhaka-13 constituency Sadek Khan is accused of amassing illegal wealth through abuse of power.

Sadek allegedly acquired properties by grabbing land at Mohammadpur. These properties include -- Sadek Khan Chicken Market, Sadek Khan Dry Fish Market, Sadek Khan Brick Market, Sadek Khan Sand Market, and a petrol pump.

Former lawmaker Golam Faruk Khondaker Prince of Pabna-5 constituency is also accused of acquiring wealth illegally through misuse of power.

According to his election affidavit, after serving three consecutive terms in Parliament, Faruk’s reported assets increased dramatically from almost Tk 48 lakhs in 2008 to Tk7.5 crore in 2023.

Faruk reportedly holds Tk 3.6 crore in bank deposits, investments in shares worth Tk4 lakhs, and savings certificates valued at Tk 3 crore.

Besides, he has purchased buses, trucks, and other vehicles worth Tk 77 lakhs. He is also alleged to have significant properties abroad, sources reveal.

ACC also started a probe into allegations against Prof Munaz Ahmed Noor, vice-chancellor of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Digital University in Kaliakair, Gazipur over the allegations of corruption and irregularities related to the establishment of a data lab at the university.

The lab, which cost Tk5.9 crore, was installed before official approval for the programme it was meant to support had been obtained from the University Grants Commission (UGC).

The commission revealed that the project, which cost Tk 5.9 crore, was associated with ‘I Threesixty Bangladesh Limited” and the “JV of BMIT Solutions Limited”.  ACC found that the project was not properly assessed and was not adequately assessed for its cost-effectiveness.
