A Rajshahi court has placed Juba League leader Jahirul Islam Rubel on a 5-day remand on charge of killing students-- Ali Raihan and Sakib Anjum, during the recent Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.
Rajshahi Metropolitan Magistrate Court-1 Judge Faisal Tarek passed the order on Sunday after Boalia police produced Rubel before the court and prayed for a 10-day remand in Ali Raihan murder case.
Officer In-Charge of Boalia police station SM Masud Parvez said Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested Rubel from Daudkandi in Cumilla early Saturday and brought him to Rajshahi in the night. Rubel has been kept in RAB custody during the night and Boalia police received him on Sunday.
Masud said that they produced Rubel before the court in the morning. He also informed the media that earlier, there were eight cases against Rubel and another six cases have been filed against him for his involvement in the events of August 5.
Rubel has been shown arrested in all of these cases, but he has been granted remand only in the murder case.
Meanwhile, in a video footage, Rubel was seen carrying two firearms and firing at students on August 5.
Two students, Ali Raihan from Rajshahi College and Sakib Anjum from Barendra University, were killed in that incident, while 50 others were injured.
He, alongside his associates, went into hiding after former prime minister Sheikh Hasina left the country later that day.
Rubel, 42, son of Abdur Razzak and hails from Chandipur area in Rajshahi City, is known to be the right hand of former RCC mayor AHM KHairuzzaman Liton.
