Bus services on 12 internal routes through Dhaka-Barisal highway have been suspended on Tuesday following the protest of transport workers, demanding a ban on three wheeler.
Earlier, a dispute broke out between a bus worker and a three-wheeler driver. The dispute began when the driver of a Mahindra (three-wheeler) assaulted a bus employee, Imon, for resisting illegal boarding of passengers onto the three-wheeler.
In response, the District Bus Workers' Union has anounnced suspension of bus operations since noon Tuesday, demanding a ban on the operation of three-wheelers on the highway.
Protests are centered at the central Nothullabad bus terminal, with workers calling for the removal of unauthorized three-wheeler stands from the highway.
As a result, bus services to areas including Barisal, Banaripara, Gouranadi, Agailjhara, and Uzirpur are disrupted, causing significant inconvenience to commuters.
The union’s general secretary, Mostafa Kamal, emphasized that three-wheelers must not forcefully board bus passengers and reiterated the need for regulation enforcement.
