UP member killed in clash over supremacy in Khulna

A local Union Parishad (UP) member was killed and several others were injured during a clash between two groups of villagers in Terokhada upazila of Khulna district on Thursday night over establishing supremacy in the area.

The deceased was identified as Md Faruk Mir, 40, son of Md Gaus Mir of Madhupur village and also a UP member.

Quoting locals’ Gazirhat police outpost in-charge Manirul Islam said Mir and Sikdar groups had a long standing dispute over establishing control in the area. On Thursday at around 7:45PM, supporters from both sides equipped with sharp weapons locked into a clash at Kola Bazar, leaving several people, including Faruk Mir, critically injured.

The injured were taken to Khulna Medical College Hospital where the Mir succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment, he added. Some other injured were Nur Mollah, 40, Jasim Mir, 40, Gaus Mir, 70, and Illias, 50.

Additional police personnel were deployed as a tensed situation has been prevailing in the area.
