At least 54 people, including six women and seven children, died in the ongoing floods in nine districts till today, the disaster management and relief ministry said in its latest release.

Nineteen people died in Feni, 14 in Cumilla, eight in Noakhali, six in Chattogram, three in Cox's Bazar, and one each in Moulvibazar, Lakshmipur, Brahmanbaria and Khagrachhari. Besides, one person in Moulvibazar remained missing.
The release said the overall flood situation in Sylhet, Habiganj and Chattogram districts improved on Friday.

As part of its relief efforts, the Ministry as of Friday disbursed Tk 4.52 crore in cash, 20,650 tonnes of rice, 15,000 packages or sacks of dry and other foods, Tk 35 lakh for children food, and another Tk 35 lakh for cattle feed.

Also, 1,15,105 packages of relief materials including dry food, clothes and drinking water collected by the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement were sent to the flood-hit areas through the Department of Disaster Management.

The recent floods affected more than 54 lakh people in 11 districts in Chattogram and Sylhet divisions and 10.09 lakh families became stranded.

Areas in 64 upazilas were inundated during the floods with 486 unions and municipalities affected.

The authorities opened 3,269 shelter centres for the flood victims with 469,687 of them and 38,192 livestock taking shelter there.  Besides, 567 medical teams have been providing treatment to the flood victims.

The flood situation in Cumilla is showing significant improvement due to recent favourable conditions. The district has not experienced heavy rainfall in the past few days, and the inflow of water from upstream areas in India has decreased. As a result, the floodwaters in the region are receding.

The Gumti River, which had been a major concern, is now flowing normally. Early reports from Friday morning indicate that the water flow has stabilised. Additionally, the leakage through the damaged section of the dam at Buruburiya is diminishing, leading to a reduction in water levels in the Burichong, Brahmanpara upazila and further improvement in the flood situation, reports a local news agency.

The southern parts of Cumilla district, including Laksham, Monohorgonj, and Chauddagram upazilas, are also experiencing a decrease in floodwater levels. According to the district administration, approximately 1,078,000 people remain stranded due to the flooding. Over 78,000 individuals have sought refuge in 724 shelters, where 225 medical teams are providing necessary care.

In response to the crisis, the district administration has allocated Tk 39 lakh and 800 metric tonness of rice for relief efforts. Additionally, the Ministry of Relief and Disaster Management has provided 1,600 MT rice and Tk 25 lakh for the affected areas.

Relief operations are underway, with various organisations and volunteers distributing aid to those in need. The situation is steadily improving as the community comes together to address the impacts of the flood.
