The nationwide hi-tech parks, software technology parks, and IT training and incubation centres will be renamed after their respective districts.

This decision was taken at the 32nd meeting of the Executive Committee of the Bangladesh Hi-Tech Park Authority at the ICT Tower in Agargaon, Dhaka on Wednesday with adviser to the Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications, and Information Technology Mohammad Nahid Islam in the chair, said a ministry press release.

The adviser said that several complaints have been received regarding the allocation and cancellation of land for hi-tech parks. It is necessary to review whether there was any  irregularity or corruption in these processes.

Nahid mentioned that the hi-tech parks have not achieved their expected results for which the parks were established. He stressed for the further review to assess the extent of political interference, corruption, or capability gaps for not getting the desired outcomes.

Identifying these issues will make it easier to move forward, he added.

He stressed the importance of studying how other countries operate in this domain and how Bangladesh can progress within its capacity.

Besides, the adviser suggested that it is necessary to focus on practical actions rather than setting overly ambitious goals.

During the meeting, a proposal was placed to name the dormitories of the high-tech parks after the martyrs of the anti-discrimination student movement, such as Mugdho and Abu Sayeed.

However, the advisor did not agree to it and said there is no need to hurry like the Awami League government, rather the memories of the martyrs have to be preserved in such a way that they last forever.

The meeting also decided to relieve the Property Management Company (PMC) of Sheikh Hasina Software Technology Park in Jashore and appoint a new PMC through an open tender process in a short time.

It also discussed about the payment of rent arrears of the tenants in Karwan Bazar's Janata Tower and whether the tower could be renovated by keeping them.

Additionally, the meeting also addressed ways to facilitate loans for investors in the high-tech parks.
