Low areas in Madaripur Town water-logged

MADARIPUR, Aug 27: Many low-lying areas in municipal area of the district have been flooded due to downpour, causing immense public sufferings.

The downpour began three days back earlier and continued intermittently.

There has been created serious dislocation to the normal public life as well as all sorts of business activities.

The incessant rain has also caused water-stagnation in the four municipalities and the remote areas of four upazilas in the district.

The most-affected areas in the town are: Darga Sharif, Kali Bari, Ukil Para in  the west of Panichhatra and Thakur Bari in the  east, Kheloar Para and Das Bari, Amirabad, College Road Judge Court, Golabari and Charmuguria. 

Several thousands of people in these areas are facing water-logging problem.

Abdul Ahad Hasan , a college-going student  of  College Road area  said, they cannot attend school because of floating filth on the flooded road.

Housewife Lubna Yeasmin in Panichhatra area said, she has been witnessing this problem every rainy season since her marriage a few years back.

Although the villages are out of this ordeal, people of the municipality area are suffering a lot, sometimes amid embarrassment, she added.

Executive Engineer Abul Kalam Azad of Madaripur Municipality said, the authorities have taken initiative to implement a Tk 10 crore project to solve the water-logging in the municipality. It will take at least two years to get rid of the situation, he added.

 Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) sources said, most of the fields of the crops, especially vegetables, are now under water.
