KALAPARA, PATUAKHALI, Aug 25: Aman seedbeds of many farmers in Kalapara Upazila of the district were rotted in rain water.
Public life came to a standstill due to week-long raining, with low-earning people suffering mostly.
At present, in carrying out Aman sapling plantation ignoring heady rain and thundering of cloud, farmers are facing extreme sufferings.
The Bay of Bengal is tumultuous in the Kuakata area, with big waves hitting the shore.
Compared to the normal level, river water levels swelled by 2-3 feet; living houses in the low area are getting inundated daily.
Most fishers took shelter in safe places.
A farmer of Pakhimara area Ratan Mia said, "I raised seedbed for two times because of rain. But my seedbed was damaged. Now it is impossible to raise seedbed for the third time."
"If we don't get government assistance, many farmers like me can't cultivate Aman," he added.
Farmer Mahbub of Kumirmara Village said, "My fields of brinjal, okra, snake gourd, and cucumber were damaged. I am all lost."
Kalapara Upazila Agriculture Officer Md Ashraf Hossain said, paddy growers have been harmed much than vegetable growers.
Farmers will be assisted by the upazila administration, he added.
