A union parishad (UP) member was hacked to death by rivals in Kushtia's Sadar upazila on Saturday over a dispute establishing supremacy in the area.
The incident happened at Asannagar village under Gossami Durgapur union in the upazila.
The deceased was identified as Mamun, 38, a local UP member and resident of the area.
Rakibul Hasan, officer-in-charge of Islamic University Police Station, said, "There had been a longstanding dispute between Wahab-Golap group and Mamun-Yahya group in that village. The two groups used to clash with each other from time to time. In a sequel to that, a fight broke out between the two groups on August 19."
"On Saturday morning, some members of Mamun's rival group hacked him indiscriminately, leaving him dead on the spot."
The body has been sent to Kushtia General Hospital morgue for an autopsy, the police officer added.
