The bank accounts of BNP Vice Chairman Abdul Awal Mintoo, his wife Nasreen Awal and son Tabith Mohammed Awal have been unfrozen after 17 years.
The Central Intelligence Cell (CIC) of the National Board of Revenue (NBR) instructed all banks to unfreeze their bank accounts on Thursday (24 August), according to a notice issued by the NBR cell.
Mintoo himself applied to NBR to unfreeze his accounts, said a senior official of the NBR.
Earlier, on August 1, 2007, the Central Intelligence Cell (CIC) of the NBR instructed all banks to freeze their bank accounts of Mintoo, his wife Nasreen Awal, and son Tabith Awal.
The tax detective office issued the order at that time based on a recommendation of a panel formed during the then government.
Last week, the NBR also removed the bar on transactions in former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia’s accounts following an application from her lawyer, which was blocked in August 2007.
The decision came more than two weeks after the fall of Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League government in a mass uprising on August 5.
