40,000 sued over attacking police station, looting arms in Ctg

Police have filed a case against 40,000 unidentified people for carrying out an attack on Kotwali Police Station in Chattogram, looting arms and torching vehicles on August 5.

SM Obaidul Haque, officer-in-charge of Kotwali Police Station, said that Ripon Kumar Das, inspector (investigation) of Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP), filed the case on Friday night under various sections of the Penal Code of 1860, the Explosive Substances Act of 1908, and the Special Powers Act of 1974.

According to the case statement, miscreants with a procession stormed into the Kotwali Police Station and looted valuables and arms on August 5 following the fall of the Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League government.

Besides, crucial documents, sensitive case evidence, and a number of police vehicles were vandalised and torched by the miscreants.

The total damage has been estimated at around Tk 8.30 crore.

Meanwhile, on August 5, miscreants carried out attacks on eight police stations out of 16 under CMP and looted valuables, torched forty-five vehicles and snatched 500 arms and 12,000 ammunition, causing a loss of Tk 21 crore.
