KULAURA, MOULVIBAZAR, Aug 22: More than 100 villages were flooded in five unions of Kulaura Upazila of the district, marooning over thousands of people.
Non-stop raining and upstream hilly tide broke dams in different areas in the upazila, deluging these villages in Tilagaon, Joychondi, Sadar, Rawthgaon, and Prithimpasha unions.
Communications on roads fell disrupted of these villages.
Upazila administration sources said, shelter centres have been readied for the water-trapped people.
Due to the non-stop raining and tide, all rivers in the district swelled, according to sources at Water Development Board (WDB).
Breaking appeared at five points of the Manu and Dholai rivers.
The WDB sources said on Wednesday, the water is flowing above 95 centimetre (CM) of the danger mark at Manu River's Railway Bridge point; besides, the water of the river is flowing above 65 CM of the danger level at Chandnighat point in the town.
The Dholai River water is flowing above 46 CM of the danger mark at Dholai Railway Bridge point.
The Kushiara River is flowing above two CM of the danger level at Sherpur Point while the Juri River is flowing above 169 CM at Bhabanipur Point.
On Wednesday morning, Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md Mahiuddin inspected different areas, along with Upazila Agriculture Officer Md Jasim Uddin, PIO MD Shimul Ali, and Union Chairman Malik.
According to locals, the water is on the rise. Irrecoverable damages were reported in the agriculture and fisheries sectors.
Water-confined people are undergoing humanitarian sufferings.
UNO Md Mahiuddin confirmed marooning of thousands of people in more than 100 villages in five unions of the upazila.
Shelter centres are ready, and 10 kilogram rice each is given to the marooned people, he added.
Executive Engineer of the WDB-Moulvibazar Md Javed Iqbal said, the rain in Tripura of India has triggered the river water swelling; the water will recede if the rain stops.
Broken dams in different areas are being repaired, the WDB official maintained.
