The Chamber Judge of the Appellate Division on Wednesday fixed next Sunday for the full court hearing against the High Court (HC) order that suspended the telecast of private TV channel Somoy TV for seven days. In response to a petition, the Chamber Judge of the Appellate Division Justice Md Ashfaqul Islam set August 25 for the full bench hearing at the Appellate Division on a petition seeking a stay order on the High Court order.
Earlier on August 19, the HC bench of Justice Naima Haider and Justice Sashanka Shekhar Sarkar suspended the telecast of Somoy TV for seven days following a writ petition by Shampa Rahman, Managing Director of Somoy Media Ltd. The court also issued a show-cause notice upon the channel, demanding an explanation within seven days as to why it should not be permanently shut down. Ahmed Jobaer, former managing director of the private TV channel, filed a writ petition with the Appellate Division seeking a stay order on the High Court order.
Senior lawyers Zainul, Ahsanul Karim, Barrister Ruhul Quddus Kajal moved for the writ petitioner in the court.
The suspension comes after recent changes in the channel's management, where Ahmed Jobaer was removed from his position as managing director and CEO of Somoy TV and replaced by Shampa Rahman on behalf of City Group.
