Separate courts on Sunday sentenced three people to life-term imprisonment in different murder and drugs cases in two districts - Lalmonirhat and Chapainawabganj.
LALMONIRHAT: A court in the district on Sunday sentenced two individuals to life-term imprisonment in a murder case filed in 2019.
Lalmonirhat District and Sessions Court Judge Mizanur Rahman handed down the verdict at noon.
The condemned convicts are: Ansar Ali Member, 60, son of late Omar Ali, and Abdul Majid alias Uri Majid, 50, son of late Zahid Uddin. Both of them are residents of Kismat Bidyabagish area in Sadar Upazila.
The court also fined them Tk 10,000 each, and in default, they will have to suffer one more month of rigorous imprisonment.
Public Prosecutor of the court Akmal Hossain confirmed the matter.
According to the prosecution, the convicts were involved in the murder of Swapan Roy, son of Binod Chandra, in 2019.
The murder, reportedly motivated by a land dispute, took place in Bidyabagish Village under Borobari Union of the upazila. After committing the crime, the assailants fled the scene, leaving Swapan's body behind.
The deceased's brother Gobinda Roy filed a murder case with Lalmonirhat Sadar Police Station (PS) the next day.
After a prolonged trial, the court found the two accused guilty under Section 302/34 of the Penal Code, resulting in their life-term imprisonment.
The judge ordered the sentence the convicts have already spent in custody be deducted from their sentence.
However, three other defendants in the case Naresh Chandra, Omiza Begum and Mahbubar Rahman were acquitted due to lack of evidence.
Later on, the convicted individuals have been sent to jail.
CHAPAINAWABGANJ: A court in the district on Sunday sentenced a man to life-term imprisonment in a case filed over drugs smuggling in 2021.
Senior District and Sessions Judge Md Adeeb Ali handed down the verdict in presence of the convict.
The convicted person is Shahidul Islam, 45, son of late Shahjahan Ali, a resident of Hakimpur Village under Shahjahanpur Union in Sadar Upazila.
The court also fined him Tk 50,000, and in default, he has to suffer two more years in jail.
According to the prosecution, acting on a tip off, members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) conducted a drive in Hakimpur area on October 2, 2021, and arrested Shahidul along with 500 grams of heroin.
On the same day, Nayeb Subedar Md Ansar Ali of RAB-5 filed a case under the Narcotics Control Act with Chapainawabganj Sadar PS.
Investigating Officer of the case Sub-inspector Ashish Sarker submitted the charge-sheet against Shahidul to the court on October 26, 2021.
After a long hearing, the court handed down the punishment on Sunday.
