Protesters occupy city streets to thwart AL's counter revolution

Coordinator Sarjis warns AL of extermination if they dare to incite turmoil

As per pre-announced sit-in protests by the Anti-discrimination Student Movement, students and activists of several political parties on Thursday occupied streets and major intersections in the city over information that ousted Awami League and its allies had plan to stage a counter revolution centring the August 15, the death anniversary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

As part of Resistance Week, the Anti-discrimination Student Movement announced sit-in protests across the country with the central programme at the Shahbagh Intersection at 10:00am.

But it was seen activists of various political parties including BNP, Jamaat, Chhatra Dal and Chhatra Shibir started gathering at Shahbagh since 7:00am.

Residential students of Dhaka University also brought out processions from every hall in early hours on Thursday.

They chanted slogans against Sheikh Hasina and demanded her capital punishment for her alleged involvement in killings of over 400 people in July and August.

Speaking to media at Shahbagh, Coordinator Sarjis Alam said Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League will be 'exterminated' if they attempt to stage a counter-revolution against the students and mass people.

He said the leaders of the fallen party should never confront the protesters if they want to survive.

"We're telling you, if you try to stage a counter-revolution against the students and people after what you saw on August 5, you'll be exterminated. If you want to maintain your existence, don't dare to utter a single word against the students and public," Sarjis said.

Sarjis continued, "The fascist government oppressed the people in this country for 16 years, and the students and public revolted against it in unison. If anyone utters the word counter-revolution against them, it means they are announcing something against the people."

Sarjis demanded swift trial of Sheikh Hasina by the International Crimes Tribunal for 'genocide and torture'.

"In the last 16 years, we saw that even if a pillar is put up in Bangladesh, one person gets the credit. Because [they said] everything was ordered by her. In that case, who had ordered all killings that took place in Bangladesh in the last one and a half months? We know that all orders were issued by the killer Hasina. Our clear demand is that we want the trial of the killer Hasina," he added.

Coordinator Hasnat Abdullah critised Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's son Sajeeb Wazed Joy's comment on Bangladesh's election, saying that it put the country's sovereignty in question.

Hasnat said, "It's evident from Joy's statement that they are depending on Modi after becoming detached from people. Joy requested Modi to arrange elections in Bangladesh as soon as possible. Just imagine how disconnected from people they are."

Joy in an interview with The Indian Express on August 14 said, "… I would hope India would ensure that elections are held within the constitutional timeframe of 90 days, that the mob rule is stopped and that the Awami League is allowed to campaign and reorganise."

Hasnat said, "Sheikh Hasina's son urged the Modi government to hold an election within 90 days in Bangladesh. But he did not appeal to the Bangladeshi people. It puts our sovereignty in question. So, you [Joy] have no right to take decision about the country staying in the US."

The Anti-discrimination Student Movement announced a week-long 'Resistance Week' programme from Tuesday to prevent a 'counter-revolution by the Awami League' after their ouster and to realise their four demands.

They demanded formation of a special tribunal to ensure speedy trial of the killings carried out by Sheikh Hasina, her party and the government.

The demands also include bringing to book those who participated in the Awami League and its associated organisations' planned killings, acts of robbery and looting targeted at members of minority communities, and accepting the fair demands of the communities; removing and bringing to book those in the administration and judiciary who legitimised the killing of students and the public, the attacks and cases filed against them; and ensuring equality of opportunity at the earliest for those in the administration and the judiciary who have been discriminated against until now.
