TAZUMUDDIN, BHOLA, Aug 6: A freedom fighter (FF) and former leader of BNP was hacked to death by his rivals over previous enmity in Tazumuddin Upazila of the district on Monday.
The incident took place in Chachra area under Ward No. 1 of the upazila in the evening.
The deceased was identified as Mahmudullah Mia, a resident of the area.
The deceased's younger brother Ward No. 1 Unit BNP President Musleuddin Jantu said that Mahmudullah Mia was a union level BNP leader. Although he joined Awami League, he was accused in 26 cases following his rivalry with Taher Chairman. On Monday evening, a group of 10 to 12 followers of Taher Chairman including his driver Fazlu, A Haque, 60, Farid, 40, Jahir, 32, Jakir, 25, and Riaz Molla attacked on Mahmudullah in the evening, which left the FF seriously injured.
Later on, locals rescued him and took to a hospital, where he was declared dead by the on-duty doctor.
Being informed, police recovered the body and sent it to Bhola Sadar Hospital morgue for an autopsy.
However, the law enforcers have detained one person in connection with the murder.
Officer-in-Charge of Tazumuddin Police Station Anwarul Haque confirmed the incident, adding that filing of a murder case is underway in this regard.
