Uttara turns battlefield, sound grenades, teargas shells hurled at demonstrators

A violent clash broke out on Friday (August 2) among agitating students, police and Awami League activists at Uttara in the capital.

The clash broke out on Friday afternoon in front of Milestone College at Uttara Sector 11.
Police charged sound grandes, fired rubber bullets and lobbed teargas shells to disperse the protestors.

The Anti-Discrimination Student Movement had a scheduled mass procession for Friday. In order to foil the mass procession, Awami League supporters thronged to Jamjam Tower premises at Uttara Sector 11 while students assembled at MIlestone College premises.

After 4:00pm, Awami League leaders and workers chased students. At that time, chase and counter-chase took place. In order to disperse the agitated students, police charged sound grenades, fired rubber bullets and lobbed teargas shells. During the clash, arms were seen in the hands of two individuals wearing helmets. One of them also opened fire.

Meanwhile, a police official claimed that the demonstrators physically assulted a sub-inspector of the Special Branch of police in front of Jamjam Tower at Uttara Sector 11 while leaving the area under the banner of "March For Justice." In order to rescue him, police lobbed teargas shells, fired rubber bullets and foiled the demonstrators. Police SI was rescued and sent to hospital.
