At least 50 people were injured in a clash between police and protesters from the anti-discrimination student movement in
Habiganj on Friday.
At that time, students set fire to the district Awami League office and threw stones at the residence of Abu Zahir, the lawmaker for the Habiganj-3 constituency.
Several motorcycles were also burned during the unrest.
The violent confrontations lasted nearly three hours, resulting in injuries to both protesters and police officers.
Eyewitnesses reported that following Jumma prayers, students gathered in separate groups before converging on the town’s main road.
As the procession approached the Awami League office, tensions escalated into a clash with some Awami League leaders and activists. When the activists began to retreat, students took the opportunity to ignite the Awami League office.
The situation intensified further when the Habiganj police arrived at the scene, leading to confrontations on both sides of the main road in front of the Muslim Quarter. In response to the escalating violence, police deployed rubber bullets and tear gas against the demonstrators.
Intermittent clashes were still ongoing at around 5:00 PM when the news was written.
The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) have since joined the police in managing the situation.
