
MADHUPUR, TANGAIL, July 15: Downpour and upstream tide swelled water level in the Jamuna River in Kalihati Upazila of the district, marooning 30,000 locals and disrupting communications.
These people have been water-confined in four unions of the upazila.
The road in Beripatal area of the upazila broke due to strong current in the river; due to this, public communication suffering has been extreme.
Locals said, they are in dire straits due to the road breaking. Boys and girls cannot go to school, they added.
They further said, "Besides, there is no end to the public suffering; erosion has occurred in many places; and new areas have been flooded."
Many dwellers of char area are staying on high places; others are living in others houses, with their families and cattle.
Nasima of Chardurgapur Village at Durgapur Union, said, "I have been staying in water for the last five days; keeping cows and goats on raised ground, I am living in trouble with my family in other peoples house; tube-well is under water; so far, no government support has been received.
Zaida Begum, a resident of the same area, said, "As my house is in a low area, water entered inside it; we are suffering food and living."
Delwar Hossain, member of Ward No. 5 of Durgapur Union, said, "About 4,000 people have become confined in my area as it is adjacent to the Jamuna River; so far, no government support has been received."
Sirajul Islam, chairman of Durgapur Union, said, 15,000 people in 7 wards out of total 9 wards of his union are marooned.
Gohaliabari Union Chairman Abdul Hai Akand said, about 5,000 people of his union are marooned. All efforts are being made to cooperate with them, he added.
Abdul Alim, chairman of Salla Union, said, 4,000/5,000 people are water-locked at his union.
Abdul Malek Bhuiyan, chairman of Dashakia Union, said, 3,000/4,000 people are water-confined at his union.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Shahadat Hussain said, due to increase in the water level of the Jamuna River, water entered different areas in the upazila, confining thousands of people in water.
After discussions with union chairmen and members, a list of victims is being prepared for providing relief assistance, the UNO added.
