Bangladesh Bank (
BB) has ordered to seize the
bank accounts of Prime Minister Sheikh
Hasina's former personal secretary
Jahangir Alam, his wife and their related institutions.
The BB also said to send all the information, including their account opening form, within the next five days.
On Sunday (July 14), the Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU) of the central bank sent letters containing instructions in this regard to all banks.
It was learnt that Jahangir served as a staff member at the prime minister's Sudha Sadan residence. He earned the nickname 'Pani Jahangir' as he used to carry drinking water for Sheikh Hasina at various events. When Sheikh Hasina became prime minister, he continued working as her personal staff for two years. As some allegations raised against him, he was removed from his post.
In this context, a special notification of the prime minister's office warned about Jahangir in December last year.
Further investigations reveal that Jahangir, despite not his position, identified himself as the prime minister's personal assistant and did some illegal work.
Jahangir was a vice president of Noakhali Awami League.
On Sunday, the prime minister during a press conference at Ganabhaban disclosed that one of her peon had amassed a fortune worth Tk 400 crore.
