New curriculum aims to face future challenges

The new curriculum in Bangladesh, launched in 2022, represents a significant overhaul of the countrys education system. This reform aims to modernize and improve the quality of education by focusing on competency-based learning rather than traditional rote memorization. Here are the key details and changes introduced in the new curriculum:

Competency-based learning: The new curriculum emphasizes developing skills and competencies in students, preparing them for real-world challenges. It focuses on critical thinking, problem-solving, creativity, and effective communication.

Reduction of exam burden: The number of public exams has been reduced. Primary Education Completion (PEC) and  Junior School Certificate (JSC) exams have been abolished. Continuous assessment through classroom activities, projects, and assignments is emphasized.

Integrated subjects: Subjects have been integrated to promote interdisciplinary learning.  For instance, Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) are combined into a more cohesive and practical learning experience.

Use of Technology: Enhancing use of digital resources and technology in the classroom. Introduction of e-learning platforms and resources to support both teachers and students.

Teacher Training: Comprehensive training programs for teachers to equip them with the skills required to         deliver the new curriculum effectively. Ongoing professional development and support for teachers.

Inclusion and Equity: Ensure education for all by making the curriculum more inclusive. Special attention to marginalized and disadvantaged groups.

Primary Level: Focus on foundational skills in literacy and numeracy. Emphasis on social and emotional learning.

Secondary Level: Developing analytical and critical thinking skills. Introduction of vocational and technical education options to cater to diverse career paths.

Assessment and Evaluation: Continuous assessment model to monitor student progress. Formative assessments including projects, presentations, and group work. Summative assessments to evaluate overall understanding and application of knowledge.

Challenges and Considerations: The new curriculum 2022 of Bangladesh, like any educational reform, comes with certain limitations and challenges.

Developing and standardizing these new assessment methods can be challenging. Language Barrier: If the new curriculum introduces content in a language that is not the first language of the students, it can pose a significant barrier to effective learning.  Equity Issues: Ensuring that all students, regardless of their socio-economic background, have equal access to the benefits of the new curriculum can be challenging. Disparities in education quality between urban and rural areas might be exacerbated. Adaptation Time: Both students and teachers need time to adapt to the new curriculum. The transition period might see a dip in performance as everyone adjusts to the new system. Parental Involvement: The success of a new curriculum often depends on the involvement and support of parents. Without adequate communication and support, parents might struggle to help their children with the new content. Evaluation and Feedback: Continuously evaluating the effectiveness of the new curriculum and incorporating feedback is crucial. However, this process can be slow and bureaucratic, delaying necessary adjustments and improvements.

Addressing these limitations requires coordinated efforts from the government, educators, parents, and the community to ensure the successful implementation and sustainability of the new curriculum.

My realization about the features of the new curriculum is that it is easy for an expert and trained teacher. When I study the TG (Teachers Guide), I realize it is much helpful and congenial for the teachers. There is no confusion. TG has made classroom activities very easy by structuring it into a clear mould for teachers.

Its time for a change. To keep up with the ever-changing world, implementing this new curriculum is essential. At the same time, it is also needed to support our teachers in technical and financial ways including raising their salaries. It is very difficult to have world-class teaching with minimum salary structure.

The teachers should also have the right to offer private tuition, much like doctors practising in private chambers within government hospitals. They have the legal rights to build coaching centres. This is the era of freelancing; so why not allow them to earn extra income using their expertise without compromising their regular classes or forcing students to join their coaching for money?

Some teachers are passionate and truly care for their students, unlike those who just buy certificates. This is not to degrade our honourable teachers but to state a hard truth. Its time to show honesty, integrity, and respect and to contribute to the nation by providing quality education.

As for our guardians, its essential for their children to learn basic life skills. For instance, "Does your daughter know how to make a cup of tea?" Often the answer is, "No, she is my princess and hasn even touched a flame." Thus, its essential to teach basic skills like frying an egg.

The new curriculum in Bangladesh aims to create a more dynamic, relevant, and inclusive education system preparing students to meet the challenges of the 21st century.
