Two women drown as boat capsizes in Netrakona haor

Two women drowned in a boat capsize while returning home after attending a funeral at Kalmakanda upazila in Netrakona district on Sunday.

The incident occurred at around 12:15pm on Sunday in Goradoba Haor of Barakapan union of the upazila.
The deceased were identified as Ujjwala Sarkar, 58, wife of Sunil Sarkar from Kulpotak village in Mohanganj upazila, and Jolly Sarkar, 50, wife of Rana Sarkar from Bishara village in Madhyanagar upazila of Sunamganj.

Citing witnesses, Kalmakanda Police Station investigation officer Jalal Uddin said the incident happened after attending the funeral of late Gaur Shankar Talukdar of Morol Bari in Baruiund village. Family members from various locations had gathered for the event.

"Around 30-35 family members from the feuneral boarded a motorized boat from Baruiund village to Madhyanagr in the morning. On the way, water began to enter the boat through a hole, causing it to sink in Goradoba Haor," he said.

Jalal further said that another boat passing by attempted to rescue the passengers of the sinking boat. Some managed to board the rescuing boat, while others swam to the shore.

However, Ujjwala and Jolly got stuck inside the boat.

They were later rescued and taken to the Upazila Health Complex where the doctor declared them dead. 

Suman Paul, a doctor of the health complex, confirmed the deaths and said the both women had died before reaching the hospital.

On information, police recovered the bodies from hospital and theses will be handed over to their families after completing legal actions.
