Police arrested 16 individuals, including a local
Bangladesh Krishak League leader, on charges of
assaulting police officials and snatching suspects in a molestation and attempted murder case from Mujguni Bastuhara area of
Khulna City on Thursday night.
Later, on Friday, the arrested persons were sent to jail by a court.
According to sources of Khalishpur Police Station, the incident occurred around 11:30pm on Thursday when police had gone to Halima Rahman's residence, who is the Cultural Secretary of Central Bangladesh Krishak League, in Mujguni Bastuhara area to arrest suspects in a molestation and attempted murder case.
Although the suspects were initially apprehended, Halima and several others launched an attack to rescue them, resulting in the injury of nine police officers. Among the suspects, Palash managed to escape during the commotion and additional police arrived shortly after to rescue the injured officers, said the source.
Khalishpur Police Station officer-in-charge Md Anwar Hossain said, "The main suspect in the molestation and attempted murder case was sitting in front of Halima's house. As soon as the police vehicle stopped, they retreated inside the house. When we attempted to enter into the residence, the doorman obstructed us and behaved rudely. At one point, while trying to use the lift to reach the eighth floor, it was stopped at the fifth floor. A mechanic later informed us that the lift had been intentionally switched off from above."
The OC further said that after capturing three suspects in the case, they were obstructed by Halima, a transgender individual named Sneha, and others while descending the stairs. The suspects were eventually rescued from police custody, leaving the officers trapped for about an hour until additional police arrived to free them.
Following the incident, a case was filed on behalf of the police, naming 14 individuals and 50 to 60 unknown people, accusing them of obstructing police duties and causing injury, he said.
In sequel to it, police raided in the area and arrested Halima and her 15 associates, who were then sent to jail following a court order on Friday, added the police official.
