
BARISHAL, July 6: A collapsed bridge over the Romzumdar Bari linking Khal (canal) belonging to the Batra-Ramanander Ank road in Agailjhara Upazila of the district is causing immense public sufferings to locals and students.
The bridge collapsed 16 days back, disrupting communications of transports and locals. But the LGED authorities didn inspect the site.
Upazila Engineer of the LGED Rabindra Chakraborti said, "I heard the matter. If I get time, I will inspect the bridge."
But he could not provide any information about the cost of construction of the bridge.
According to different sources, the bridge of the Batra-Ramanander Ank road was built on an iron structure about 20 years back. But the bridge started to develop cracking within few years as low quality materials were used in the built-up.
In the last two years, a middle part of the bridge collapsed slightly, turning it risky for communications.
The matter was informed to the upazila LGED authorities. But they did not take any measures.
On June 21 (Friday) afternoon, the north part of the risky bridge collapsed.
"After a little collapse, we informed it to the LGED," said students Baroi, Babul Haldar, Tapos and others who use the bridge for going to schools and colleges.
Rajihat Union Chairman Md Ilias Talukdar said, "I have informed the matter to Upazila LGED Engineer Rabindra Chakraborti."
"After being informed, I have raised a bamboo pathway for locals and school-college students," he added.
Upazila LGED Engineer Rabindra Chakraborti told journalist, "I will inform the matter to the authorities. I will work according to their decision."
