The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on Tuesday issued a notice seeking the wealth statements of former inspector general of police, Benazir Ahmed, and NBR official Matiur Rahman within 21 working days for the sake of an inquiry over amassing illegal wealth.
The notice also seeks information about the assets of their wives and children.
ACC Secretary Khorsheda Yasmeen came up with the information at a press briefing in the commissions Segun Bagicha headquarters in Dhaka.
The ACC is currently conducting two separate inquiries against Benazir and Matiur and their family members over allegations of amassing illegal wealth.
Khorsheda said that the commission also issued a notice asking Benazirs wife, Jissan Mirza, and his daughters, Farheen Rishta and Tahsin Risa, to submit the wealth statement to the ACC.
ACC also asked Matiurs first wife, Layla Kaniz, their son, Tofiqur Rahman Arnab, and daughter, Farzana Rahman Ipsita, and Matirus second wife, Shammi Akhtar, to submit their wealth statements to the commission.
The ACC secretary said, "If they fail to submit the wealth statement within the stipulated time, the commission will take measures following its laws."
During his tenure, Benazir Ahmed served as IGP from April 2020 to September 2022, as director general of the Rapid Action Battalion from January 2015 to April 2020, and as commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP). ACC officials reported that court orders had been issued to seize Benazirs assets.
So far, 12 flats in Dhaka, including four in Gulshan, have been identified under his family name.
Meanwhile, Matiur Rahmans name was the talk of the town on social media this Eid-ul-Azha after rumours surfaced that his son had purchased a goat for an astonishing Tk 15 lakh.
The exorbitant price of the goat sparked widespread attention, along with a mix of curiosity and controversy.
However, Matiur Rahman denied these claims, saying, "Iffat, the person being talked about, is neither my son nor even a relative or acquaintance. My only sons name is Toufiqur Rahman. I will formally protest these rumours."
Subsequently, scrutiny fell on Matiur Rahman and his familys lifestyle. Several media reports said Matiur Rahman and his family own resorts, shooting spots, bungalow houses, land, and other properties. On May 28, the ACC issued a notice asking Benazir and his family members, but they did not appear before the ACC to give their statements regarding graft allegations against them.
The ACC, based on a media report, decided on April 18 to investigate allegations of amassing illegal wealth by Benazir and his family.
Matiur was the president of NBRs Customs, Excise, and VAT Appellate Tribunal, but the Finance Ministry removed him from the post on June 23 and attached him to the Internal Resources Division amid graft allegations.
