PABNA, June 26: Farmers in different areas of Ishwardi and Sadar upazilas of the district are not going to their crop fields in fear of Russells viper snakes.

According to field sources, Russells vipers are seen in different areas along banks of the Padma River in char areas.

Larmers have cultivated different crops in raised grasslands along the river banks. Locals are being attacked by the deadly snake.

According to environmental organizations, it is possible to avoid this situation by creating social awareness.

Different seasonal crops including maize, sesame, onion, Aman and Aush  are cultivated seasonally in Charruppur, Nalgari, Ruktala, Guide Bank Para, Gaongoyil, Kadimpara, Chargargari, Digha, Lakshikunda, Barampur, Pakuria, Kalampur Purba Para, Charkululia and several areas.

A farmer Hafizur Rahman, 45, died of Russells viper snakebite on May 31 last while he was working to harvest his banana in  Digha Village of Sahapur Union.

After one day, another farmer Raja Molla died from a snakebite while working in the crop field in Kalampur Purba Para Village. Many think it is also a Russells viper bite.

Nazrul Islam, a local resident of Chargargari Village, said, "I cut my sesame a few days back; later on in the afternoon, I saw several Russells viper snakes."

A farmer of Gaongoyil Village said, "In the last few days, while I am cutting paddy I came to see a Russells viper to twist the paddy. Later on, with the help of the locals, I killed the snake."

Anisur Rahman Sharif, chairman of Lakshikunda Parishad, said, people cultivate seasonal crops along the river banks; this is one of their means of livelihood for them; and cattle are also reared.

"In March, a farmer in my area was bitten by a Russells Viper, and later on, he died," he added.

Upazila Agriculture Officer Mita Sarkar said, more caution should be taken while harvesting crops from all crop lands in the grazing area.

It needs to raise public awareness about Russells Vipers, he added.

Ishwardi Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Subir Kumar Das said, recently, the infestation of poisonous Russells Viper has increased in the grasslands along the banks of the Padma River.

"We have started working to raise awareness through local public representatives. The Upazila Parishad will provide special shoes (gumboots) to the farmers in the grazing area," he added.
