Former JU VC Prof Kazi Saleh Ahmed passes away

Professor Dr Kazi Saleh Ahmed, former vice-chancellor of Jahangirnagar University (JU) and retired professor from the university's Department of Statistics passed away on Tuesday while undergoing treatment at a private hospital at Dhanmondi in Dhaka.

He was 83.

Professor Ahmed is survived by his wife, a son, a daughter, relatives, numerous colleagues, students, and well-wishers.

Professor Kazi Saleh Ahmed's daughter, Professor Dr Meherun Ahmed confirmed the matter.

Professor Ahmed served as the vice chancellor of Jahangirnagar University from 1988 to 1993.

His first Namaj-e-Janaza was held after Zohr prayers on Tuesday at Taqwa Mosque near his residence in Dhanmondi, followed by a second Namaj-e-Janaza after Asr prayers at the central mosque on the Jahangirnagar University campus.

Professor Dr Meherun Ahmed, on behalf of the family, has requested prayers for her father.

In honour of Professor Ahmed, the Jahangirnagar University Department of Statistics Alumni Association (JUDSAA) has declared a one-day mourning on Tuesday.

During the mourning day, a black flag was hoisted, and the university flag was kept at half-mast. Additionally, all university classes, except for exams, were suspended.

Current Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Md Nurul Alam expressed deep grief and sorrow over Dr Ahmed's death.

In a condolence message, he stated, "The passing of Professor Dr Kazi Saleh Ahmed represents an irreplaceable loss for the country and the nation. His absence will be deeply felt in the fields of statistics and data science. The university authorities respectfully remember his contributions to education, research, and the development of the university's physical infrastructure."

Professor Dr. Md Nurul Alam also prayed for the repose of Dr. Ahmed's soul and extended his condolences to the bereaved family members.
