At least eleven people were killed and over 1, 50, 475 homes were destroyed after the cyclone Remal smashed into low-lying areas in the country on Sunday night.
State Minister for Disaster Management and Relief Md Mohibbur Rahman at a press conference at the secretariat in the capital on Monday said that at least ten people were killed and over 1, 50, 475 homes were destroyed after the cyclone Remal smashed.
He said due to the cyclone, more than 37 lakh people have been affected in 19 districts of the country, while 10 people have died so far. The cyclonic storm wreaked havoc in 107 upazilas and 917 municipalities and unions of 19 districts, damaging over 1.50 lakh houses, he said.
Among them, three people died in Bhola and Barisal, one each in Patuakhali, Chattogram, Shatkhira, and Khulna. They mostly died after they were crushed under fallen houses or collapsed walls or trees.
Apart from this, a student died after a portion of a wall of an under-construction building collapsed on the roof of a tin-shed school while a class was running, in Cumilla
In Bhola: Three people, including a woman and a child, died during heavy rains influenced by the cyclone.
According to the local administration, Maneja Khatun, 50 died after a tin-shed house collapsed on her at Char Umed union of Lalmohan upazila of the district on Monday morning.
Besides, a child named Maisha, 4, died after being crushed by a tree inside her house due to Cyclone Remal in Daulatkhan municipality and Jahangir, 50, of Chachra Union on Borhanuddin upazila were also killed during the storm.
Deputy Commissioner of Bhola Arifuzzaman, said local administration is working to estimate the damages caused by the storm.
Power supply to the district remained suspended since Sunday, disrupting mobile networks and internet service.
A number of trees and electric poles were uprooted while many thatched houses were damaged during the storm.
In Barisahl: Three people were killed in Barishal due to heavy rain and wind caused by the cyclone Remal.
Of them, two people were killed and another was injured when a portion of the roof of a multi-storied building collapsed on a tin shed hotel due to heavy rain caused by the cyclone in Rupatali area of Barishal early Monday.
The victims were hotel owner Lokman Hossain and his employee Mokchedur Rahman. The injured named Shakib was admitted to Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital.
Meanwhile, another victim Jalal Sikdar, 55, son of Asmat Ali Sikdar of Char Darial village of Bakerganj upazila of the district, died when tree branch fell on him while he was going to the local bazaar.
In Patuakhali: A young man died after being swept away by strong current due to Cyclone Remal while he was trying to rescue his sister and aunt in Kauarchar area under Lota Chapli union of Kalapara upazila of Patuakhali on Sunday afternoon.
The dead Shahid, 27, son of Abdur Rahim, was a resident of Anantapara village under the upazila.
In Khulna: A man named Lal Chand Moral, 36, son of Late Gohor Ali Moral, died after a tree fell on him due to the strong wind caused by the Cyclone Remal in Surkhali union of Batiaghata upazila on Monday morning.
Khulna Additional Deputy Commissioner Md Nazmul Hussain Khan said that after staying at the shelter on Sunday night, Lal Chand Moral returned to his home in Batiaghata in the morning and died after being crushed by a tree.
In Chattogram: A young man died after a wall of an under-construction building collapsed on him in the Textile Residential area adjacent to Bayazid Bastami area in Chattogram city around 8am on Monday.
Kamruzzaman, senior officer of the Bayezid Fire Service Station, said Saiful Islam Rhidoy, 26, was killed as a portion of a wall of an under-construction building collapsed on him in the morning after heavy rain in the port city.
In Satkhira: Shawkat Moral, 65, son of Late Narim Moral, a resident of Napitkhali village under Gabura union of Shamnagar upazila, died of stroke while he was going to a shelter centre at Shyamnagar upazila in Satkhira district on Sunday night during a storm caused by cyclone 'Remal'.
Masudul Alam, chairman of Gabura Union Parishad, said Shawkat suddenly fell on the ground of the road while he was heading to a shelter centre at night. He then died on the spot.
In Cumilla: A 12-year-old student at Nur Ideal School and
College in Saktola area of Cumilla city was killed after a wall of an
under-construction building collapsed on a tin-shed school around 11:40
am on Monday.
Md Ashiqur Rahma, head teacher of
the school, said that a portion of a wall of an under-construction
building collapsed on the roof of the tin-shed school while a class was
running, leaving Saiful Islam Sagor, son of Ali Ahmed of the area
critically injured.
The student was immediately rushed to the Cumilla Sadar Hospital where on-duty doctors declared him dead, the teacher added.
