Clashes, cocktail explosions, polling centre occupation mark UZ polls

The first phase of upazila elections in 149 upazila was completed amid clashes, cocktail explosions and boycott BY BNP and other likeminded political parties.

The sixth round of upazila elections started from eight oclock in the morning. In this phase, the schedule of 152 upazila was announced, but the elections were held in 139 upazila across the country.

As of writing this news result of Dinajpur, Habiganj, Magura, Feni, Bandarban upazilas were declared.

Former upazila chairman of  Hakimpur upazila in Dinajpur Kamal Hossain Raj  with motorcycle symbol was elected unofficially after defeating current chairman Harun Ur Rashid  with Telephone symbol.

In Magura Awami League organizing Secretary Rana Amir Osman in Sadar upazila and Shariat Ullah Rajan in Sreepur upazila were elected  Chairmen.

In Feni General Secretary of Upazila Awami League of Fulgazi Upazila Parishad became chairman.

In Habiganj Iqbal Hossain Khan has won the post of chairman in Baniachang upazila parishad election.

In Bandarban Sadar Upazila, Abdul Quddus elected as chairman.

Parvez Kabir has been elected chairman with a huge vote in Birampur of Dinajpur with horse symbol.

The reports sent to the Election Commission from various upazila at 3:30 in the afternoon half an hour before the end of polling showed that the voter turnout was less than 20 per cent in some upazila.

Two presiding officers of two upazila were arrested for irregularities. The EC suspended polling at a centre in Khagrachhari as the situation went out of control.

Violence has been reported in Narsingdi, Lakshmichari of Khagrachhari, Madaripur, Narayanganj, Bogra and some other upazila in this election due to forcible occupation of polling centres.

Narsingdi District Election Officer Rabiul Islam told the media in the morning, some people were injured in the clash outside Kakshia Govt Primary School Centre of Narsingdi Sadar Upazila. Later, the situation was brought under control with the intervention of law and order forces.

In this years upazila elections, the ruling Awami League did not give the party symbols to its candidates. And the opposition party BNP boycotted the election.

The news of this voting could be seen on live broadcast in different TV channels since the morning. Low attendance of voters has been observed in many polling stations.

There have been reports of violence since morning in some upazilas including Narsingdi, Khagrachharis Lakshmichari, Madaripur. Several people were also reported injured.

Voting at a centre in Khagrachharis Lakshmichari upazila was suspended in the morning due to allegations of forcible stamping of ballot papers by candidates.

The district election officer said that the polling was suspended due to the complaint of stamping of the ballot papers by force in favour of a chairman candidate in that centre.

In the morning, the news of the clash was received in Narsingdi Sadar Upazila. The attack and clash between the two chairman candidates took place at the Kakshia Govt Primary School polling station in the upazila. Later RAB, police and executive magistrate went and brought the situation under control. At least 10 people were injured in this attack.

Narsingdi district election officer Rabiul Alam told the media that at around 9:30 in the morning there was a chase and a clash between the candidates of the two parties. Some were injured. Later, the situation was brought under control in the presence of law and order forces.

Besides, clashes and cocktail explosions occurred between supporters of two candidates in Bandar Upazila of Narayanganj.

The EC Secretary Jhangir Alam said there have been isolated incidents outside the centre at some places.

 However, there was no significant damage. Information comes to us from inside the polling station, we can provide that information. Apart from this, the information outside the polling station does not come to us. So we cannot give the information of that centre.

Law enforcement forces arrested a presiding officer and two assistant presiding officers for irregularities in Gabtali upazila of Bogura.

The presiding officer of a centre at Rameshwarpur Union, Shahjahan Ali, sent 900 ballot papers with signatures and seals outside the centre through agent Ershad Ali.

They were arrested from Majhpara Kusum Koli Govt Primary School around 11:30am. Later, the police arrested the agent of the chairman candidate Ershad Ali and recovered 600 ballot papers.
